Nearly 100 million people take Proton Pump inhibitors (PPI’s) like Nexium (esomeprazole), Protonix (Pantoprazole), Prilosec (Omeprazole), etc. Most use these temporarily for heartburn but many are taking these medications inappropriate for ongoing chronic GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). Other examples of PPIs include, Dexilant, Vimovo, Prevacid 24-Hr, Zegerid, Zegerid OTC, and Aciphex.
PPI’s lower acid secretion by inhibiting the cells in the stomach responsible for acid production. Medical doctors use these medications to lower stomach acid to relieve heartburn symptoms. Unfortunately this symptom management trend has led to longer term use and for purposes never intended. Not addressing root cause, has serious consequences for the 120 million Americans that take prescriptions for this condition.
I found this article that outlines many of the key areas I am concerned with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
Risks of PPI’s
Here are a few highlights:
Long term usage associated with osteoporosis (Progressive pathologic bone weakening)
Causes various vitamin and mineral deficiencies (Magnesium, B12, folate, others)
Alters beneficial bacterial colonies in digestive tract
Lower protective mechanisms for immune system (lower stomach acid)
Can produce rebound high acidity if taken routinely (dependency issue)
Long term use associated with Kidney disease
Interacts with numerous medications such as Plavix (Used anti-platelet following heart attacks)
This short post was meant to raise awareness.
These pills are everywhere, many over the counter.
