Raising Testosterone Naturally

I like to watch Friday Night Fights.  However, I find the TV ads during that time slot really annoying.  Based on the repetition of ads about hair loss, erectile function, and prostate problems, one would guess that men (The predominant viewer), are ALL bald, impotent, and unable to hold our bladders!

More importantly the ads portray men as feminine, incompetent, weaklings.  Advertisers play up the persona of a tail tucked, wimpy caricature of a man that needs their product to have any success in life.

That’s all phooey.

 Men need testosterone!

(So do women but in lessor and different ratios).

So how do they get testosterone without dangerous and expensive hormone supplementation?

Recently I began introducing the concept of purposefully adding essential fats and cholesterol at specific times of the day to enhance hormone production.  From a physiologic standpoint, our bodies make testosterone and other hormones primarily from the “Chassis” of cholesterol.  High stress, poor diet, excess alcohol, lack of physical activity, Statin drugs, and chronic narcotics all contribute to lower sex hormone production.

In essence I’m encouraging my patients to consume raw ingredients for hormone production at specific times daily.

Over the last few months I’ve put several men on the following regimen for raising testosterone naturally.  The following results from an actual patient…we’ll call Kip….were repeated with the other cases.

 Kip’s Testosterone levels

Date    TESTOSTERONE
12/18/2012 =  335
02/07/2013 =  467
04/16/2013 =  557

Note the considerable increase from a “low” normal range in 12/2012 to a “solid” normal range in 4/2013.

 What did he do?

1-2 boiled eggs morning/night (Night most important)

3-5 Macadamia nuts morning/night (Again, night most important)

That’s it!  No other changes.

Patient’s like Kip with improving testosterone levels typically notice better energy, improved libido, improved erectile function, better recovery from exercise, less moodiness, and generally a better sense of well-being.

I encourage NRGTRIBE members to try this natural approach if you have low-T. (Or any other hormone imbalance for that matter—See menopausal symptoms). Athletes seeking better performance?  This will work for you to regardless of gender.

No more stereotypes.  We don’t need drugs or huge doses of dangerous synthetics to boost hormones.  We can do that naturally with real food nutritional options.

I look forward to questions and feedback.

Must the eggs be hard boiled to achieve results?I can’t stomach hard boiled eggs .

Sorry must have missed this post in the past….No, the eggs do not have to be hard-boiled.

What if I have high cholesterol.

    • William Curtis MD January 8, 2014, 12:28 pm

Tons of research that egg consumption is in fact healthy and normally raises Good Cholesterol. I have written a great deal on some of the problems surrounding the treatment of cholesterol as a disease.

I also saw a long, but very well written article, that I’d like you to review. It very nicely refutes many of the Low Fat Dogma plaguing our population. It’s well worth your reading.

I eat eggs daily. The folks that I have on the NRGDIET and other similar paleo-style diets nearly always see weight loss and improved cholesterol panels. Cholesterol is used to build hormones including testosterone.

Thank you for the informative website and “straight” talk on many subjects that can be confusing due to the mixed messages we find online.

On this topic of testosterone diet, are eggs and macadamian nuts been the best combination for raising T levels? Can we switch with other types of food and nuts? Pistachio instead of macadamian….etc…I have nothing against eggs 😉

    Salutations

    • William Curtis MD January 9, 2014, 12:58 pm

Great question. My answer is straight forward, eggs and macadamia nuts are dense in cholesterol and fat. Of course both serve as precursors and building blocks for hormones like testosterone.

I gave those choices because that’s what I experimented with and measured results.

Clinically I suspect any whole food source of cholesterol (Avocados, other types of nuts, etc) might have similar results. I suspect locking in on eggs isn’t completely necessary.

The idea is basically to avoid high sugar, processed food diet and get back to what our body needs for repair and maintenance, essential fat and cholesterol. Most modern dieters are avoiding fat or eating huge amounts of carbs….all deleterious for hormone production.

On another note, I am currently looking into high dose fish oils with patients. I’ll report back if I see similar benefits.

      Thanks for your question.

Do I take the eggs and nuts together?

    • William Curtis MD January 15, 2014, 10:07 am

Absolutely. I suppose alternatively you could eat the eggs morning and night, snack on nuts mid-morning, late afternoon. The point? Eat them daily.

    Raw or roasted Macadamia?

    • William Curtis January 21, 2014, 12:01 pm

Raw might hold quality of nutrients better, but roasted is ok too. I didn’t differentiate with the men I tested on.

Concerning the timing -What is the significance of eating the eggs and nuts at night? Are you referring to dinner or sometime closer to bed time? First time I have heard anything related to eating eggs /nuts in the evening. Where can I find more info on this subject? Any other sources you could refer to on this subject ?? My T level is 588 and I am 61 yrs. old. Would this protocol increase my levels ?

    • William Curtis MD May 23, 2014, 3:05 pm

The results I wrote about in this posts were the actual results from patients treated in my clinic. I was intially playing with the testosterone boosting experiments detailed by Tim Ferriss (Blogger, Author, Lifestyle Designer) who wrote about similar topics on his blog page.

The concept stems from the idea that many people fear fat and cholesterol. Unfortunately these are the building blocks for sex hormones among many others. Increasing the raw material for testosterone in a twice daily pattern seemed reasonable since many hormones normally fluctuate in production depending on the time of day. My experiments in clinic have thus far supported that idea.

First off, your T levels are not low. Due to the numerous variables related to sex hormone production, I couldn’t even guess as to whether your levels will rise. Medications, diet, activity level, stress, etc all affect testosterone. Each individual varies….

My advice? Test levels and experiment. The concept is safe and I’ve seen adding cholesterol and essential fats improve hormone balance and testosterone levels consistently in those that have attempted the nutritional therapy.

I hope you will report back any findings…positive or negative.

Great article! I’m going to try this out. Quick question about eating the eggs and nuts at night though.: Is it ok to eat them with my dinner, which is usually around 6 pm? Or is it more effective to eat them closer to bed time?

    • William Curtis September 30, 2014, 4:53 pm

Absolutely ok to eat them earlier in the evening (Like with an early dinner).

  • RJ December 25, 2014, 8:30 pm

Can I substitute boiled eggs with raw eggs?

    • William Curtis MD December 26, 2014, 8:38 am

RJ, that would provide the same raw ingredients. Raw gives you a higher risk of salmonella, etc….but really only if you don’t have clean eggs or get shell contamination in the mixture….
